💥 Expanding our lineup: Now offering KC Turbo Products! 🚀
If you’ve been dealing with repeated stock turbo failures—whether on Powerstroke, Cummins, or Duramax engines—it’s time to consider an upgrade. But choosing the right turbo isn’t as simple as going bigger. With so many options available, including complete VGT turbos, Whistler turbos, and 5-inch turbo-back exhaust systems, it’s essential to make an informed decision based on your engine’s power goals, driving habits, and intended use.
Why Upgrade to KC Turbo from Choate?
Factory turbos often struggle to handle the demands of performance modifications, especially when pushing for higher power. At Choate Engineering Performance, we offer a range of KC Turbo products that are engineered to address the weaknesses found in OEM units by providing improved reliability, faster spool times, and greater power gains. Our lineup includes options specifically designed to enhance your truck’s performance.
If you have a Choate Engine, this is a great option for an upgrade. Always check the health of your turbo when installing an engine to ensure the longevity of the running engine. If your turbo has failed, KC Turbo is a reliable replacement choice. For customers seeking a comprehensive solution, we also offer KC Turbo products on our fully running engines—complete with fuel and air componentry—to provide a seamless, high-performance experience.

VGT vs. Non-VGT: Which Should You Choose?
The VGT vs. non-VGT debate is a frequent topic for diesel enthusiasts. While VGTs can adjust their vane positions to provide better low-end power and reduce lag, they are more complex and prone to failure due to carbon buildup in the vanes. Non-VGT turbos are simpler, with fewer moving parts, making them more durable and long-lasting. However, they can suffer from turbo lag if not sized correctly.
According to KC Turbo expert Cameron Lewis, a properly functioning VGT will outperform a non-VGT in setups under 650 horsepower, especially on a Powerstroke engine. Above this power level, a single non-VGT or a compound setup can shine. For most daily drivers and those towing heavy loads, a VGT remains the optimal choice, offering a balance of drivability and power.
Why Size Matters in a Turbo
Choosing the right turbo size is crucial to avoiding performance issues. While larger turbos generate higher peak power, they often suffer from turbo lag and can make low-end drivability difficult. A properly sized turbo, matched to your engine’s needs and power goals, ensures smooth performance. For towing applications, controlling Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) is a key consideration, which our KC Turbo offerings are designed to address.
