Machining Processes:

Full CNC blue print machining.

This means boring, decking, honing and line honing to the designers intent.

Align honing the main bore housing allows the crankshaft to center in its housing as well as providing the necessary finish for heat dissipation of the bearings.

Afterwards, the block is fixtured in our Rottler CNC vertical machining center. This is to insure the cylinders are at ninety degrees from the crankshaft centerline. After this, it is moved into our Rottler CNC honing center where the cylinder wall diameter is machined to .0002 inch consistency.  And the piston to wall clearance is determined per the application, and honed to size.

Once the foundation has been made true, the deck suface of the block is then machined to a surface finish of 30Ra or better. This meets or exceeds the factory specification for both flatness and smoothness of the block to head sealing surface. This is mandatory for proper sealing of a MLS Gasket.

Common Issues With The Ford Powerstroke 6.7L (and how we fix them)

  • Main and Rod Bearing Clearance Issues- IE , spun bearings.
  • We resolve these issues by machining for the correct clearances. This increases reliability and allows for use of heavier weight oil.
  • Upgraded bearings designed to handle higher levels of stress.
  • Valve Failures- OEM Exhaust Valves separate causing at the least, lost compression, at the worst, piston to valve contact causing catastrophic failure.
  • We do not modify the existing valves as most do, we use an all new valve with better materials that do not have this high-heat separation issue.
  • Crank Gear Spinning- Standard on all our 6.7L builds is a welded crank gear.
  • From Ford this gear is prone to spinning, throwing off timing, and bending all 32 pushrods.
  • TIG welding the gear in place eliminates this issue.tig welded cam gear 6,7
  • Cam Tunnel Misalignment- The issue here comes with the aftermarket fix which is to use larger clearance bearings.
  • This in turn causes low oil pressure. We do not use larger clearance bearings, we use our own proprietary bearings which allow for perfect alignment.
  • OEM engines suffer from oil supply issues! However our 6.7’s see on average 5 lbs more oil pressure at startup than others due to machining processes.

Optional Parts are not installed and are covered under the manufacturer’s warranty, not by CHOATE.
