Marine Long Block Setup, Sea Trial Break-In & Service Schedule

1. Installation & Component Requirements

Installation of Cummins 5.9 and 6.7 Marine long block engines requires mandatory replacement of critical support system components. Failure to replace or thoroughly clean these items can lead to catastrophic engine failure and void your warranty.

Mandatory Replacements

The following parts MUST be replaced with new items upon engine installation:

Recommended Replacements & Inspection Standards

If the following components are not replaced, they must at minimum be thoroughly cleaned and inspected by a competent repair station prior to re-installation:

  • Heat Exchanger: Flush clean and inspect for restriction or internal damage.
  • Intercooler & Aftercooler (if applicable): Ensure cores are completely clear of oil, water, or debris.
  • Exhaust Manifold: Must be cleaned completely free of rust.
    ⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Rust inside the exhaust manifold will fall back into the cylinders once the engine is started, causing severe cylinder wall score and engine destruction.
  • Turbocharger: If the previous engine failure sent material contamination through the system, the turbocharger must at minimum be cleaned.
    • Debris will damage journal bearings and thrust bearings.
    • Ensure shaft end-play and radial movement are within spec.
    • Leakage around shaft seals can lead to excessive oil consumption. High seal leakage can introduce enough oil into the cylinder to cause liquid lock and bend connecting rods.

2. Start-Up Procedures

Follow these steps in strict sequence during initial engine priming and first start-up:

💡 1. COOLANT VACUUM TEST: Pull a vacuum on the cooling system and record the holding pressure for 3 minutes before filling. This guarantees the cooling system is completely sealed and eliminates trapped air pockets that lead to localized hot spots and cylinder wall scoring.

Pre-Start & Idle Diagnostics

  • Record Cranking Oil Pressure: Measure and log oil pressure while cranking prior to initial engine start-up.
  • Mechanical Gauge Monitoring: Once started, monitor oil pressure using an accurate mechanical gauge. Bring the engine up to operating temperature and record oil pressure at idle.
  • Leak Check: Thoroughly inspect the engine bay to verify that no boost leaks or exhaust leaks are present.
  • Exhaust Smoke Inspection: Visually inspect exhaust gases under load during dock trials or initial run. Excessive smoke can indicate poor airflow restriction or an overfueling injection system.

3. Sea Trial Break-In & Oil Rules

💡 INITIAL BREAK-IN PERIOD: Run dedicated break-in oil during the first 2 hours of run time during your initial sea trial. This specialized oil promotes break in of the cylinder walls.
⚠️ MANDATORY OIL FLUSH: The initial break-in oil must be drained immediately after the 2-hour trial to extract initial contamination from the break in process.

Oil Selection Guidelines

  • Conventional Oil: Conventional motor oil is required for the first 200 hours of engine operation.
  • Synthetic Oil Prohibition: The use of synthetic oil is strictly PROHIBITED for the first 200 hours

4. Scheduled Maintenance Guide

Perform maintenance at whichever interval occurs first (operating hours or calendar time). At each scheduled maintenance interval, perform all previous maintenance checks that are due.

  • Engine Coolant Level - Check

  • Seawater Strainer - Check

125 Hours or 3 Months

  • Sea Water Pump Belt - Check
  • Electrical Connections - Check
  • Air Cleaner Restriction - Check
  • Sea Water Hoses - Check
  • Zinc Anodes - Check

250 Hours or 6 Months

  • Lubricating Oil and Filters - Change
  • Engine Coolant System Anti-Freeze - Check
  • Radiator/Expansion Cap - Check
  • Seawater Pump (Minor) - Check
  • Fuel-Water Separator Element - Change
  • Fuel Filter (Spin-On Type) - Change

500 Hours or 1 Year

  • Sea Water Pump - Check
  • Belt Tensioner - Check
  • Batteries - Check
  • Drive Belts - Check
  • Aftercooler - Flush
  • Marine Gear Oil Cooler - Flush
  • Sea Water Heat Exchanger - Flush
  • Air Cleaner Element - Check
  • Engine Mounting Bolts - Check
  • Vibration Isolators - Check

2000 Hours or 2 Years

  • Cooling System - Flush (Includes complete Drain, Flush, and Refill)
  • Viscous Vibration Damper - Check

5000 Hours or 4 Years

  • Overhead Set - Adjust
    *Perform initial valve lash adjustment to nominal spec at this interval. Subsequent checks should be performed every 2,000 hours (or 50,000 Miles / 81,000 Km) thereafter.
