FAQs

What makes a Choate Engineering Diesel Marine Engine more reliable than a standard rebuild?

Like all our diesels, we don't just rebuild them, we remanufacture them to surpass OEM specifications:

  • We use state-of-the-art CNC blueprinting to correct inherent factory flaws.
  • Surfaces are decked to achieve Ra 30 or better.
  • Cylinders are diamond honed to within 0.0001 inch of piston diameter and bored at a true 90-degree angle from the crankshaft centerline.
  • Main bearing bores are line honed to establish a true, straight centerline.
  • Cylinder heads are Magnafluxed and pressure tested for cracks or leaks.
  • Crankshafts are inspected for fatigue and polished to 0.0005 concentricity or less.
  • All pistons, rings, and pins are meticulously weight matched to 2 grams or less.

Marine engines are exposed to environmental factors that make remanufacturing them unique. Marine-focused upgrades include:

  • All-new, upgraded exhaust valves that eliminate high-heat separation.
  • Billet freeze plugs that eliminate the rot-out common with standard brass or steel plugs in saltwater environments.

All this means a quieter cabin, a smoother ride, and far less stress on your engine during offshore outings.

Are your diesel marine engines shipped drop-in ready for a repower?

Our diesel marine engines ship fully assembled and are designed for a seamless swap into your engine bay. They come complete with engine core components, cylinder head components, gaskets and seals, aftercooler/intercooler, wet exhaust manifold, raw water pump, new injectors, and more.

Can you fix the freeze plug saltwater corrosion issue that kills so many diesel marine engines?

Standard brass or steel freeze plugs are notorious for corroding and failing in harsh coastal and offshore environments, which can quickly end your season. To ensure ultimate corrosion resistance, we eliminate standard plugs entirely and install premium Billet freeze plugs on all of our diesel marine engine blocks.

How do you fix the problem of exhaust valve drop?

Dropped valves spell catastrophic engine failure at sea. We tackle this by blueprinting the entire valve train geometry and installing all-new, upgraded exhaust valves designed specifically to eliminate high-heat separation. Combined with precision-decked surfaces for flawless MLS head gasket sealing, our cylinder heads are built to take the sustained high EGTs of high-idle trolling and wide-open throttle transitions.

What is the warranty on your marine engines, and does it cover commercial use?

We stand behind our precision engineering with a comprehensive 2-Year / 2,000-Hour Warranty. Whether you are running a charter boat, a commercial fishing vessel, or enjoying recreational cruising, your investment is protected against defects in materials and workmanship.

(Note: To activate, proper installation procedures must be followed, including the installation of required associated engine components, performance of regularly scheduled maintenance, and warranty registration/document submission within 45 days of purchase).

How does the core charge work on diesel marine engines?

We require a standard $3,000 core charge for our marine blocks. You have two options at checkout: You can choose to accept the charge upfront, which is fully refunded once we receive and inspect your old engine core to ensure it meets our rebuildable standards, or you can opt to send your core to us first to avoid the upfront charge entirely.

Do you offer diesel marine engines for both commercial and recreational vessels?

Absolutely. Both the mechanical 6BTA 5.9L and the electronically controlled QSB 6.7L are legendary powerplants built for the blue. Whether you need relentless, low-end torque for a heavy commercial trawler or smooth, high-speed cruising for a sportfisher, our CNC-machined and balanced marine diesel engines are tailored to meet the demands of the open ocean.
