18mm vs. 20mm: The Ultimate 6.0L Powerstroke Cylinder Head Guide
18mm vs. 20mm: The Ultimate 6.0L Powerstroke Cylinder Head Guide
This guide breaks down exactly what those measurements mean, how to identify what you have, and whether or not you can swap between the two.
What’s the Difference?
The terms "18mm" and "20mm" do not refer to the size of the valves, the injectors, or the head bolts. Instead, they refer to the diameter of the alignment dowels used to seat the cylinder head onto the engine block.
- 18mm Heads: Used on early production engines from 2003 through early 2006.
- 20mm Heads: Introduced in late 2006 and used through the end of production in 2007.
Why Did Ford Change the Design?
The transition to 20mm dowels was an engineering improvement. By increasing the size of the alignment dowels, Ford and International provided a more robust locating point. This helps reduce "head shuffle", the microscopic movement of the head against the block under high cylinder pressure, which is a primary cause of head gasket failure in these engines.
How to Identify Your Cylinder Heads
You cannot always rely on the "year" of the truck, as engines are sometimes swapped or manufactured right on the production split date. Here are the three most reliable ways to check:
Measure the Dowels (The Gold Standard)
If the heads are already off, use a digital caliper to measure the diameter of the dowel pins sticking out of the engine block.
- 17.9mm – 18mm = You need 18mm heads.
- 19.9mm – 20mm = You need 20mm heads.
Check the Casting Number
Look for the casting number on the cylinder head (usually found under the valve cover area).
- 18mm Casting Numbers: Common numbers include 1843080C1, 1843080C2, or 1843080C3.
- 20mm Casting Numbers: The most common number is 1870389C1.
Build Date & VIN
Generally, if the vehicle was built BEFORE January 12, 2006, it should have 18mm dowels. If it was built AFTER, it likely has 20mm dowels. However, physical verification via the dowel or casting number is always the safest bet.
Can I Swap Them? (Compatibility)
A common question we receive is whether an owner can "upgrade" to the later 20mm heads on an older engine. The heads and the block must match.
- The Conflict: You cannot put 20mm heads on an 18mm block because the holes in the head will be too loose on the smaller dowels, leading to gasket failure.
- The Workaround: It is possible to use the later-style 20mm heads on an 18mm block by using "Stepped Dowels." These specialized adapters are 18mm on the bottom (to fit the block) and 20mm on the top (to fit the head).
Note: If you are performing this swap, ensure you have the correct dowels on hand before beginning assembly, as standard 18mm or 20mm dowels will not work for a "mixed" setup.
