Saltwater Rot-Out (Freeze Plugs)



If you've ever poked around the bilge of an older vessel, you know that saltwater is undefeated against standard factory materials. Standard freeze plugs (also known as core plugs) are typically stamped from thin mild carbon steel or made from cast brass. Mild steel rapidly oxidizes in high-moisture marine environments, while standard brass can suffer from dezincification (a destructive chemical process where saltwater leaches the zinc right out of the alloy) leaving behind a weak, porous copper shell.
Because of these inherent material limitations, one of the most common complaints among 6BTA owners is freeze plug rot-out. Once a standard plug inevitably rots through from exposure to the salty environment of an engine bay, you will instantly lose coolant pressure or experience raw water leaks directly into the bilge.

Now let's get nerdy: Billet aluminum is a premium material because it not only resists the elements but also totally eliminates the threat of destructive saltwater rot-out thanks to a natural chemical process called passivation. The moment aluminum is exposed to oxygen it forms a microscopic, highly dense surface layer of aluminum oxide. This self-healing chemical shield acts as an impenetrable barrier, preventing the underlying metal from reacting with the corrosive salts and moisture in the bilge and ensuring these billet plugs will outlast the engine block itself.
Exhaust Valve Drop



Unlike a truck engine that benefits from transient loads, momentum, and coasting, a marine engine is continually pushing through the water against hydrodynamic drag. It operates at a continuous high Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP), the mechanical equivalent of pulling a fully loaded trailer up a steep grade in deep mud at wide-open throttle, indefinitely. This endless duty cycle generates extreme, sustained Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs). Over time, this intense thermal stress degrades the factory two-piece, friction-welded exhaust valves. The extreme heat cycling causes metallurgical fatigue at the weld joint between the valve stem and the head, ultimately leading to bimetallic high-heat separation.
The result? A dropped valve. Once the valve head snaps off and falls into the combustion chamber, it results in violent piston-to-valve contact. This punches a hole in the piston, shatters the cylinder head, and forcefully ejects metallic shrapnel through the exhaust manifold, directly into your turbocharger's turbine blades.
